More Info on Bias

Check out this information from Ms. Hamilton about bias. I think it might be more helpful than the information on the handout.

  • Bias by omission: leaving out facts or one side of the story that you don’t “like” or don’t “think are true”
  • Bias by selection of sources: including sources that only support one view or side of the story
  • Bias by story selection: choosing stories that coincide with a certain agenda, while ignoring stories that align with opposing views
  • Bias by word choice: using loaded words or labels that convey certain meanings instead of more neutral terms
  • Bias by placement: when a website or newspaper places an article in a certain place based on how important you think the story is
