2. Summary:
Officer Larry Boyd, Chief of Police at MacArthur High School, arrested a 14 year old muslim student named Ahmed Mohamed for what, according to the officer looked like a bomb. It was later proven that the ‘bomb’ was actually a clock that Ahmed made for a teacher. The clock was made in a suitcase with many electrical wires and a circuit board, making it bulky. However, the clock was not dangerous.
Chief Of Police Larry Boyd says they would have treated a white boy the same and kids should not be taking stuff like that to school. And also said that it made the teacher uncomfortable so he needed to do something.
He had his fingerprints and mugshots taken at a juvenile detention center and he was suspended from school for three days.
“Ahmed’s arrest is a logical conclusion to Islamophobia in Irving and it’s deplorable” says the Dallas chairwoman of the Democratic Party. They had been having issues with Islam's wanting to create their own court and therefore whites were becoming fearful of them.
People are now coming together to raise money for Ahmed and he was accepted into MIT’s space camp. He was able to meet with Obama.

Why? Article was written to illustrate the overall stereotype of Islamic people in America. The
White House got involved saying that this was a “good illustration of how pernicious stereotypes can prevent even good-hearted people who have dedicated their lives to educating young people from doing the good work that they set out to do”. Details like Ahmed’s family bringing some of the reporters pizza shows they are not “bomb-making” people.
3. Bias in article: The article assumes that the act of placing Ahmed under arrest was due to religious or racist hatred without consulting the officer who arrested the Islamic Ahmed. Quotes like “good illustration of how pernicious stereotypes can prevent even good-hearted people who have dedicated their lives to educating young people from doing the good work that they set out to do”, representing the fact that the author was really exploring the fact that this event was caused by a racial stereotype.
4. Democratic Values:
Liberty: Ahmed, a young Islamic boy, had a love for engineering and made a clock. His believes in the Muslim religion hindered his ability to present this clock and made school an unsafe place for him. The oppressive manner of the teacher and police officer interfered with Ahmed’s liberty to life in America.
Equality: The article implies that Ahmed was not treated equally due to the fact that he is Islamic and the town had been having some issues with Muslims recently. He did not get the same treatment that a white person would have gotten and therefore he was not treated equally.
Justice: Ahmed was treated like any other kid would be according to the police officer. The article definitely implies that a three day suspension and the admittance to a juvenile center was over the top for the lack of crime committed. It was not a reasonable treatment to handcuff him, in the end he received justice by apologies and getting to meet Obama.
