Who/What?
Tim Wolfe, the University of Missouri System President, announced the fact that he was resigning, effective immediately, Monday, November 9, 2015. Wolfe had been under fire from black students in the university system because they say he had done nothing to stop racial animosity on the campus.
There were many protests on the Missouri Campus, even the threat of a student and faculty walkout. The University of Missouri’s football team drew national attention when protests announced during that weekend said that they would not participate in any team activities until Wolfe was removed. The coaches and athletic director of the University of Missouri supported the players and even supported one student who was staging a hunger strike.
However, Wolfe did say after he resigned that he hoped his resignation would lead to healing. The University of Missouri System plans to enact a couple of initiatives in the next 90 days to address racial turmoil. They will appoint their first chief officer for diversity, inclusion and equity and they will also review all university policies related to staff and student conduct. They also pledged to work toward a more diverse faculty and staff.
The protests began after the student government president (who is black) said that people in a passing pickup truck shouted racial slurs at him in September. In October, members of a black student organization said slurs were hurled at them by an apparently drunken white student. A swastika was also found in a dormitory bathroom.
On Sunday, when a group of 150 students were protesting, two trucks flying Confederate flags drove past the site. The participants in the protest, and blacks in general on the campus, feel as though it is an unsafe and unhealthy environment for them. When?
On November 9, 2015, Tim Wolfe, the University of Missouri president, announced that he was stepping down.
Where?
The University of Missouri
Why?
Wolfe was getting a lot of negative attention for the reason of neglecting to end racial animosity on campus.
Democratic Values:
Equality - the student body want to live in an environment more friendly to racial difference on campus.
Bias: The articles we read, while well written, seem to overlook a problem that is central to the issue. There is very little meaningful communication between the concerned students and college leaders such as Tim Wolf. If the communication had been better, perhaps the problems would have been solved without such hostility. Regardless, the drastic measures seemed to have worked, so at least there’s that, but the articles certainly overlook that there was very little meaningful communication about the issue. The articles were not very biased overall however.
