Maro Guloyan of Armenia supposedly committed suicided by hanging herself with a belt, but the marks on her neck don't justify this means of death. This photo illustrates what is happening to women in Armenia living in a "highly patriarchal society". Women are being beaten by the husbands so severely that it even results in deaths like this one. They are often covered up and even ignored by the police because most me think that it is "normal" in their society. This image shows the long way the world has to go to protect the rights and lives of women all over the world.

Interpretive Statement: I think that the message of this photograph is that women do get raped even when we think that they are thought to be very strong(ex. If they are in the army). I think that the picture also portrays the idea that being in the army is very hard and tiring, both mentally and physically, as seen by the women lying on the bed.

Although being part of the Corps De Ballet puts you in a place where you blend into one, the backstage atmosphere can show how concentrated each individual is before going on stage for one of the most difficult Corps De Ballet roles in ballet history, this picture captures those few moments before going on stage very nicely.

When looking at this picture, everything that is going on screams division of society. Just looking at the clear division of people who are resorting to the nomadic actions of fishing either for pleasure or because they need to provide for their family, and the clean cut society looking down on them is shocking.

When I look at this man I see a raw emotion that is hard to capture in a photograph. His expression tells me he has a troubled past. His physical traits in the photo are evidence to this. As a whole he represents the spirit of the Iranian people and how they will stand tall against the violence of war.

Summary of the Attack

A man on Saturday December 5th attacked two people at a London Tube station. No deaths resulted from the attack but two people were injured. It is suspected to be a terrorist attack and the London police are treating it as so. The attacker was rumoured to have said “This is for Syria” mid attack. Mahuaydin Mire, who was responsible for the attack was arrested on the suspicion of attempted murder.

Summary:
A 6-year-old boy was shot to death in the front seat of his father's vehicle while he was buckled. The shooting happened on a dead-end street and it is unclear why officers pursued or why shots were fired. Investigators say there were no outstanding warrants against the father and the child’s father wasn't armed. The child was hit by five bullets in the head and chest which was all filmed on police body cameras. The footage was considered to be “most disturbing thing ever seen”.  Both officers were charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

Democratic Value:
Common Good- the common good is general safety, security, and welfare. This case goes against the common good of general safety, security, and welfare because an innocent child was killed and his father was injured for no reason.

Bias:

There was little to no bias in the article. The article just gave information about the incident and stated facts surrounding what happened. We didn't feel as though it author took a side of wether the shooting was justified or unjustified, the author just explained the information. This article was written to tell people what was going on and provide them with information.

Summary: Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik killed 14 people and injured 21 at Farook’s place of work, the Inland Regional Center, a branch of the San Bernardino Department of Public Health. they had 2 pistols and 2 “assault style” weapons. officers have not at this time declared it a terrorist attack. federal authorities say they are investigating whether or not Farook was in contact with and ISIS recruiter out of minneapolis who goes by the online handle “Miski”. Miski is said to have instructed two people in the past to attacks a “Mohammed Cartoon Contest” in Garland, Texas. Miski, aka Mohamed Hasan.

Bias: None, very factual presentation, talked about the shooters more than the victims.

Democratic values:  Common good. The side issue constantly talked about was gun control, in Obama's oval office address, he talked about how congress needed to authorize military operations against Islamic state and to tighten gun restrictions. These issues are all important to everyone’s safety.

Mali Hotel Attacks:

Summary of the Attack: At the Radisson Blu Hotel in Mali’s Capital on Friday the 20th 27 people were killed leaving six in the hospital with serious injuries in a terrorist attack. The shooters were indiscriminately shooting at guests and diplomats that were staying at the hotel and others in the area. During the attack 76 people were taken hostage inside the hotel. Later that day the two gunmen who had stormed the building were shot and killed by Mali’s police force. Terrorist group Al Mourabitoun (a group who is in correlation with Al- Qaeda) is claiming responsibility for the attacks.

Why: It is suspected that the attacks were carried out because of the government’s aggression in Northern Mali. The group also demanded that the hostages in France be released.

Mongi Hamdi, head of the U.N. mission in Mali, said the diplomats' meetings, which began Thursday, were a possible reason for the attack.

"I think this attack has been perpetrated by negative forces, terrorists, who do not want to see peace in Mali," Hamdi said.

Democratic Values at stake:

Common good: The democratic value of common good is in danger over the past week, with the Paris attack being one of the causes of this attack. The civilian casualty count has brought up a debate over proper protection and necessary action that needs to be taken to stop further attacks.

Summary: President Obama made a plan to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees and many political figures oppose it. Most of the governors are from places like Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, and some others that have already resettled large numbers of refugees from Syria. They are worried about letting people in because they might not have a verifiable document and could possibly pose a terrorist threat. “The State Department said it had not reached a conclusion about whether states could legally refuse them.” Last Monday, Donald Trump said we should deport refugees that were already here and that closing some mosques might be a good idea if “evidence of absolute hatred” for Westerners is found.

Bias: This article focuses a significant amount more on the what the Republicans think and tends to give their opinions about how they are so against what Obama is doing, sort of calling them out for verbally attacking Obama’s decision.

The New York Times is a more liberal newspaper and therefore their claim leans more towards support of the Obama administration’s decision to continue accepting refugees.

Democratic Values: The democratic value that is related to this issue is Common Good because this problem concerns the safety of the refugees from Syria and how the United States is receiving them.

Also Equality, because it brings up the issue of whether these refugees should be treated the same and have equal access and opportunity.

Recently, a bill was passed through Congress that would defund Planned Parenthood and repeal parts of Obamacare. Planned Parenthood has been the center of the abortion debate by quite some time now. Obama is expected to veto the bill.

Why: 

Republicans have been looking to defund Planned Parenthood for a while now because it provides abortions for thousands of women each year.

Bias:

We looked at two articles, one was slightly conservative, one was slightly liberal, neither were extreme.

Democratic Values:

-liberty: This has to do with the right to life/bodily autonomy for both the woman and the unborn child. There has been a lot of debate which is more important.

-justice: This has to do with the legality of everything Planned Parenthood has been doing recently. These allegations have been debunked.

-equality: Since some women only have access to Planned Parenthood for healthcare, this shows an issue of wealth/location inequality.

Summary:  

Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple, opened fire at a holiday party in the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino on Wednesday.  Fourteen people were killed and 21 wounded, most of them employees. Both attackers were then killed in a gun battle with police. Farook was born in the United States while Malik, a Pakistan national, had an arsenal of ammunition and pipe bombs in their Redlands home.

Why: 

Terrorism / officials said Malik pledged allegiance to Islamic State  in a Facebook post and Farook had contact with people from at least two terrorist organizations overseas. Malik had studied at a Pakistan seminary known for anti-Western, fundamentalist views.

Fairly factual, not a lot of bias overall.

Democratic Values:

Common good:  Common good is a democratic value that is at stake.  With so any mass shootings in recent news. The common people are at such a danger in current time and not only physically but mentally and emotionally people are scared and losing trust in society.

Article Title: Donald Trump's Muslim US ban call roundly condemned

Summary:  Various leaders have spoken out against Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.  These include leaders of the Council on American-Islamic relations, The U.N., and other presidential candidates such as Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Jeb Bush.  All of those candidates see Trump’s idea as overreaching, based in prejudice, and highly offensive.  These comments came after the San Bernardino shootings where the shooters were known to be radical and the female shooter even pledged allegiance to ISIS.  As a result, Trump’s plan would involve disallowing any Muslim from entering the country, but it would allow Muslims in the military to “come home”.  Trump also made very inflammatory comments in this speech such as “many Muslims nursed a ‘hatred’ towards America”.  This is not the first time that Trump has made extremely offensive comments towards muslims, such as claiming that Muslims in New Jersey were cheering after 9/11 and wanting to make a database to target muslims in the U.S.

Why: Because of recent terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, Donald Trump thinks the only necessary solution to preventing future attacks is to not let any Muslim people into the country.  Trump hopes to prevent “many more World Trade Centers” through this.  He sees the ban of all Muslims entering the country as the only solution.  

Bias:

Fairly factual, though the author put in the opinions of other candidates.  This shows how Donald Trump’s view is mostly unsupported and denounced as a way to discredit it. Also, the article uses terms such as “horrified reaction” to suggest distaste toward Trump.  BBC News is known to have a more liberal view.

Democratic Values:

Equality: By selecting what kind of people would be allowed to enter the country, Donald Trump’s idea would act against equality in this country.  He would discriminate against a large group of people, this is a complete opposite of the equality which our country takes great pride in.

Common good:  Common good is also a democratic value that could possibly be at stake.  Although nothing Trump says will become law unless he becomes president, restricting Muslim people from coming into the United States would risk the common good of the world.  Many refugees that are coming into the country are Muslim.  If there was a law restricting Muslims, these refugees would be in grave danger in their native countries.

On Friday, November 20th, there were gunman who raided a Malian hotel called  Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako and shot bullets rapidly killing everything that moved. During the attack, they did not say a word except “Allahu akbar”, which means “God is Great” in Arabic. There was at least 21 people killed out of the 170 hostages (About 140 guests and 30 employees were there). During the attacks, the hotel was holding delegations attending peace talks. Islamist militant group Al Mourabitoun claimed it started the attack together with al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. It said the attack was retaliation for government aggression in northern Mali. The group also demanded the release of prisoners in France. Algerian jihadist and leader of the group, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, may be behind the attack because Mokhtar Belmokhtar was targeted in US airstrike against Libya. There was a diplomats' meetings that may be a likely reason why the hotel was targeted. Mali has declared a 10 day state emergency and a 3 day mourning in which the flags will be flown at half mast. In the end, two of the attackers (total or 2 or 3) died by being killed by security forces or being blown up by themselves.

There were a variety of reasons of why this hotel was attacked. One reason is because of the Islamist militant group, and Al Mourabitoun claimed it started the attack together with al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. It said the attack was retaliation for government aggression in northern Mali. The group also demanded the release of prisoners in France. The other reason is because of the Algerian jihadist and leader of the group, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, may be behind the attack because Mokhtar Belmokhtar was targeted in US airstrike against Libya. The last was because there was a diplomats' meetings that was occurring and may be a likely reason why the hotel was targeted.

Bias:

We believe that the article we read was a little bit biased. When talking about who had died in this incident, they mostly focused on the one American citizen, giving her a paragraph of information and words from Hillary Clinton while the other deaths were just stated. Otherwise, it was a pretty general article giving us the facts.

Democratic Values:

Life = This act of violence goes against the value of life, these innocent people were staying in a hotel where they are supposed to feel safe yet were invaded and even killed. Justice =The attackers were most likely attacking this particular hotel to receive justice or revenge because there were peace talks being held there at that time.
