What China has been building in the South China Sea

Derek Watkins, New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/07/30/world/asia/what-china-has-been-building-in-the-south-china-sea.html?ref=world

Who: China

What: China has been building man-made islands on top of reefs in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. The environmental affects have been horrible and there will be long term consequences.

Where: South China Sea (Spratly Islands)

When: March 2015 through now

Why: China wants to have a greater sphere of influence and have a say in trade in the area. They will control the fishing industry and the potential oil and gas reserves in the South China Sea.

Democratic Values:

Equality: The Spratly Islands are supposed to be divided evenly between the countries in the area. China is 500 miles from the islands and unfairly staking claim in the Spratly's. The Chinese are violating the equality that was set out for the islands.

Justice: The US is trying to provide justice and prevent the Chinese from doing this. The US recognizes the environmental catastrophe that this could turn into and they are trying to prevent the Chinese. Justice is needed and the US wants to provide it.

Bias:
Derek Watkins has a strong bias against the Chinese. He realizes how much of a disaster this could turn into and he wants the US to prevent it. He clearly knows about how the Chinese have a spotty record when it comes to things like human rights and environmental conservation.
