Yale University's email about Halloween

What/Where?
Yale University’s Intercultural Affairs commitee sent an email to the students saying to not wear culturally offensive costumes this Halloween (ex. Blackface, fake Indian head dresses, etc..) (Email Here) This sparked a debate between students at Yale University and a woman named Erika Christakis.

Who?
Erika Christakis, Associate Master of Silliman College sent an email out to the school saying students should be allowed to wear whatever they want, even if it’s considered offensive. She wanted to protect the free speech and expression of the students. She believed that students are mature enough to wear appropriate costumes and make the right decisions. Many students did not appreciate this behavior and signed an open letter to Erika Christakis. The letter addressed the issues that students had with her letter. They believed that she was allowing racially offensive behaviours and that was not okay.

When?
Videos became public of the students arguing with the husband of Erika Christakis, Nicholas Christakis, in the courtyard on November 5th and 6th.

Why?
This article was written because the author Liam Stack wanted to bring up the controversy of this topic and how it is still playing a huge role in many college campuses. It was written because the author wanted to show both sides of the story:

Democratic Values-
Common good:
By sending this email out, Yale intended to make all of its students feel safe and equally protected. This leads to every student feeling safe and secure(general safety). Yale’s intentions were to improve public safety and security from racism.

Liberty:
The other side of this topic is liberty. Many students believed that this email was disrespectful to other races. This impedes their freedom because some of the ethnic minorities didn't feel like they were being represented properly.

Bias-
We didn’t see much bias in this article. There wasn’t any clear bias but the author, Liam Stack, did go into detail about Erika Christakis’ email and how it was sent out and what it said(Her email talked about how she wanted to protect freedom of speech and expression of the students).
