Summary:
A 29 year old man with a knife stabbed and assaulted three people in an East London underground tube station in a suburb called Leytonstone. The attack occurred around 7:06 p.m. on Saturday, December 5th. The attacker beat the 56 year old victim until he was unconscious and then assaulted him with a knife. The victim sustained serious, but non-life threatening, injuries while two other victims, a man and a woman, sustained less serious injuries. The police did use a taser and detained the attacker, and the police are treating this incident as a terrorist attack since the attacker was saying, “this is for Syria.” However, the police declined to comment on any reports and the government isn’t giving much information to the public about why they believe that this was a terrorist attack. Richard Walton who is the chief of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command said that the one of the reasons they are stating it as a terrorist attack is because of information received from witnesses and subsequent police investigations.
Who:
A 56 year old victim sustained serious, but non-life threatening, injuries, while 2 others sustained less serious injuries. A 29 year old man, who is suspected of assault, was arrested for the crime.
What:
A man with a knife stabbed 3 people. It was reported that he said “this is for Syria.” Police used a taser and detained the attacker.
Where:
In an East London underground subway station in a suburb called Leytonstone.
When:
This attack occurred at around 7:06 p.m. local time, and happened on Saturday, December 5th.
Why:
The attack is a suspected terrorist attack, but police refuse to comment on why it’s being investigated as suspected terrorism. Police are unsure whether the man was mentally-ill or acting alone, but they do believe it was a terrorist attack. Richard Walton who is the chief of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command said that the one of the reasons they are stating it as a terrorist attack is because of information received from witnesses and subsequent police investigations. This attack occurred days after the Parliament approved British airstrikes on Islamic State group targets in Syria which is why it's believed to be one of the reasons behind the attack.
Bias:
There isn’t much of a bias in the article because it happened so recently. It states what happened and what the suspected reasons behind it. It's short because of how recently it happened as well as how little information has been released to the public.
Democratic Values:
Common Good=This attack made everyone in the subway feel vulnerable in that a terrorist could be anywhere at anytime amongst normal people. They no longer feel safe or secure. The common good of the people has been disrupted by terrorist attacks recently and needs to be put back together to make people feel safe again.
Justice=The attacker was taken down fairly quickly without killing anyone, so he is alive to be questioned about the increase in terrorist attacks. Justice needs to be given to the families of the people wounded and we need to find a way to bring terrorism to justice.
