Russia Says Bomb Downed Plane in Egypt and Intensifies Attacks on ISIS
Neil MacFarquhar, New York Times
Summary:
The article discusses Russia and the Islamic State, as well as the situations ties with Egypt, the United States, and France. Russia declared for the first time on Tuesday that a bomb aboard a Russian charter jet, full of vacationers, caused the aircraft’s destruction more than two weeks ago. The Kremlin responded immediately by escalating airstrikes across Syria. Although the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility, there is no proof at this time. The plane was a Metrojet Airbus A321, and the bomb ended up killing all 224 people aboard. The plane crashed on the ISIS controlled Sinai Peninsula in Egypt on October 31, 2015, however it was November 17 that Russia declared it was a bomb that took the plane down. After a series of attacks across the globe that point toward the Islamic State as the culprit, heightened fear, war between ISIS and Russia, and the destruction of the plane, Russia has since coordinated with the French military to increase attacks on Syrian territory, especially areas held by the Islamic State. “We will search for them everywhere, no matter where they are hiding,” Mr. Putin said at a meeting with his security council broadcast on television. “We will find them in any place on the planet and will punish them.”
Democratic Values:
- Liberty
- ISIS through their attacks have attempted to oppress the liberty of the citizens of this world. Liberty is the ability to live, behave, and believe as one pleases without oppressive restrictions or limitations. ISIS promotes a singular way of life and refuses to accept the liberties of other people, and Russia is fighting against this oppression and the attacks on their people’s liberty.
- Common Good
- By banding together with the United States and France, and calling for a united front against ISIS, Russia is working toward eliminating the threat that our world faces which is in the interest of the common people, for the common good. The common good is general safety, security, and welfare, which at the time are threatened by ISIS, and Russia is attempting to collaborate with other countries to rectify this problem.
Bias:
As recent news has caused turmoil throughout the world against the Islamic State, there is no question as to the fact that there is bias against the Islamic State. The article is not blatantly, but quite obviously against the Islamic State. There is also some bias and assumption as to why and how Russia is using the worldwide momentum against the Islamic State to help repair frayed relations with the west. The article appears to use opinions disguised as facts but otherwise gives relevant and truthful facts.
