Who: President Barack Obama

What: President Barack Obama announces that he has rejected the application for the Keystone XL Oil Pipeline.

Where: The Keystone XL Oil Pipeline would have been a 1,179 mile long pipeline from the Canadian Oil Sands in Southern Canada to a pumping station in Nebraska and ultimately to Gulf Coast oil refineries in Texas.

Why: Obama says that it would not have “served the national interests” of the United States. He says it has taken an “overinflated role” in the climate change topic. He wanted to end this long-term controversy. He says it wouldn’t have created long term jobs or affected energy dependence.

When: Obama announced his decision on November 6, 2015. Environmentalists have been fighting against the pipeline for the last seven years.

Summary: President Obama has announced that he is rejecting to build the Keystone pipeline from Canada because he claims it would not be the best thing for the United States. The Keystone pipeline has been the center of heated debate for years. Republicans and oil companies have demanded that Obama approve the pipeline claiming that it will create jobs and stimulate economic growth. Environmentalists have displayed their concerns surrounding the irreversible damage that could be caused by the pipeline.

Bias: BBC is known to have a liberal bias. The article talked about Obama's decision but equally mentioned the Republican Party's reaction. The article does not appear to have bias for or against Obama's decision. The article simply discussed and presented both sides of the argument.

Democratic Values: Common good: Obama claims that he made this decision with the good of the country and the people in mind.
